Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts Log in sign up User account menu 9 Petra vs Petrel. These projects will involve well log correlation, mapping, and cross sections. With this being said, does anybody know anything about the two programs Which would you reccomend in terms of ease of use, capabilities, and of course pricing. Im just looking for opinions right now because i cant seem to find too much through google searches. It will run different modules for mapping well log correlation and a little well bore planning (Ive used it for the last 3 years). Petrel by SLB is a much heavier software similar in some ways but is mainly for reservoir modeling. For students not building geo models, Id definitely side with Petra unless theyre doing geocellular models. Id be pissed using up valuable research time fighting a very complex price of software rather than doing research and development of my project. Petra Software Price Full Models AndIts biggest strength is its 3D processing that allows you to build full models and run simulations on them. Its likely far above what you would need to just do some basic mapping and correlating. Petra Software Price How To Use ItIf you do need the full capabilities of Petrel, Id recommend at least having one person around who already knows how to use it as its complicated to learn at first. Depending on if youre in the US or Canada Id recommend using Geoscout or Accumap. I believe both companies do serve in the US as well, but theyre strongest in Canada. Petrel is very useful for modeling but like SketchyUncle said there is a large learning curve (I took an entire semester long grad class centered around Petrel, yet I still dont feel confident in it). Since you are at a university I believe IHS who makes Petra might donate it to your group. Petrel is really geared towards 3D, taking into account 3D seismic and fracturing micro seismic. While you can still map layers and structures in Petrel, for most field development and well planning, use Petra. Petrel all the way. And something you hadnt considered: Petrel is a better skill to have on a resume. I have access to well cores, what is the feasibility of creating my own maps correlations from data I obtain myself Just as a side personal enrichment project. Continue this thread level 1 2 points 6 years ago Honestly, if youre just doing mapping, log correlation and cross sections, and want to learn the software fast, id go with Petra. Petra Software Price Free Training ForPetrel really shines in the 3D world, and when integrating data and workflows across multiple domains (Seismic interp, velocity modeling, GIS, mapping, correlation, geomodeling, reservoir simulation) That said, price shouldnt be an issue, as both IHS and Schlumberger are historically very generous to universities, and will set you up with software, and even some free training for graduate students (when openings exist in the training course) Petrel versatility tends to be a bigger bullet point to add to a resume than Petra, so that might be another factor to look at as well. Doing basic spatial property modeling and displaying in 2 3D eats up on average about 60 of the RAM on my computer- upwards of 98 doing a large computation. I am working on a heavy duty laptop (dont know specs offhand) because I dont use Petrel all the time, so if you guys plan on keeping your projects on laptops might want to think about that.
